New York medical tint exemption: how MV-80W works

New York’s medical window-tint process uses form MV-80W. The applicant completes one part, an eligible medical professional completes another, and the application goes to DMV with the required supporting documents.

The form is for a real medical need under the state’s rules. Downloading it, receiving a diagnosis or sending in an application does not by itself establish that an exemption has been granted.

Who can request the exemption?

The official MV-80W application says the person needing protection may be the driver or a regular, habitual passenger. If the request concerns someone other than the registered owner, the form asks for information about that person and their relationship and use of the vehicle.

The form also explains that the exemption depends on specified medical conditions and on ordinary protective measures not providing adequate protection. It lists examples of those measures, including protective clothing, sunscreen, eye protection and clear UV-protective film.

A qualified medical professional needs to assess the actual situation. This guide does not diagnose a condition or tell you what to claim to obtain darker tint.

Who completes the medical section?

The currently retrieved form requires page 2 to be completed by a New York State-licensed physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner. It also requests a copy of that professional’s New York license.

That list matters. Do not assume every clinician allowed to sign a tint document in another state can sign this particular form. Read the current form’s instructions before making an appointment or paying for paperwork.

The medical section asks about the examination date, the qualifying condition, the minimum light transmission needed and why the listed personal protective measures are not adequate.

What documents should I gather?

Use the form’s own checklist. The retrieved version requests the completed application, the medical provider’s New York professional-license copy and a photocopy of the New York vehicle registration.

Enter the vehicle and registrant information as it appears on the registration. Complete the additional person’s details when the exemption is requested for a regular passenger rather than the owner.

The medical page says the examination must be within 60 days of submission. Check that timing before mailing an application that has been sitting unfinished. Use the current form’s submission address and instructions rather than copying a mailing address from an old article.

Keep a complete copy for your own records. Send medical information through the official application process; there is no need to post it in a public comment or send it to a tint-information website.

Does a condition on the list guarantee approval?

No automatic approval is promised by this guide. New York DMV’s tint page explains the exemption route and links the application. The form requires medical information and certification supporting the need, including why other protective measures are not enough.

A diagnosis name alone leaves out those requirements. If your clinician has questions about eligibility or the requested documentation, use the current official instructions and DMV contact route.

The ordinary tint law remains relevant while the request is unresolved. A pending application is not a permission slip for any shade on any window.

What should I do after DMV responds?

Read the actual decision and any conditions. Ask DMV to clarify anything unclear before choosing film based on the exemption. Keep the issued documentation available for the situations in which it is required.

Then discuss the specific permitted installation with a qualified installer. Identify the vehicle and windows covered rather than asking for a generic “medical tint package.” The New York state guide explains the ordinary window rules that form the starting point.

If you change vehicles or the relevant circumstances change, do not assume the old document transfers automatically. Ask DMV what its current process requires for your case.

What if I am researching this for 2027?

Download the form again from the official site before applying. A form can change even when an older version remains in search results. Check the eligible signers, supporting documents, examination timing and submission instructions on the version you actually use.

Our medical-exemption resource explains why each state’s process must be checked separately. New York paperwork should not be treated as a nationwide tint permit.

Common questions

Can a regular passenger qualify for a New York tint exemption?

The official form allows a request for a regular, habitual passenger as well as a driver. It asks for the passenger’s details and information about their use of the vehicle, alongside the medical requirements.

Can I use a general doctor’s note instead of MV-80W?

Use the current DMV application and its specified documentation. A general note should not be assumed to replace the form, eligible signer and supporting documents.

Can I install darker tint as soon as I mail the form?

Submitting an application does not establish approval. Wait for the actual DMV decision and understand its conditions before relying on an exemption for the installation.
