Iowa changed its front-side-window rule on July 1, 2026. Older summaries showing 70% for those windows are outdated.

| Window | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Windshield | At least 70% light transmittance. HF 766 does not create a general dark sun-strip exception. |
| Front side | At least 50% light transmittance, including the sidewings ahead of the driver. HF 766, section 1. |
| Rear side | No rear-side VLT minimum is specified by section 321.438(2), as amended by HF 766. Section 321.438(1) still requires clear vision. |

Which rule is current?
The legislature records HF 766 as signed May 15, 2026, with a July 1, 2026 effective date. Its enacted text sets the windshield and front-side thresholds directly. The September 30, 2026 DOT notice proposes rescinding the older administrative rule to match that law; that notice is proposed cleanup, not the source of the new limits.
Before buying film
The limits describe window transparency. Have the finished glass-and-film installation measured rather than relying on a film shade name. The amended provision does not establish separate sedan and SUV standards, a numerical reflectance ceiling, or a tint certification sticker requirement.
Medical exemptions need fresh confirmation
The older administrative rule preserved certain pre-July 4, 2012 medical exemptions. Because DOT is proposing to rescind that rule following the 2026 statutory change, this guide does not promise that an old certificate authorizes a new installation. Confirm an existing exemption directly with Iowa DOT before relying on it.
Before you rely on this guide
This is general information, not legal advice, a vehicle inspection, or permission to install a particular film. Exceptions and enforcement procedures can depend on your circumstances.
- Current treatment of grandfathered medical certificates remains unverified during the administrative-rule transition.
- Separate color, mirror, and labeling requirements were not established by the tint-specific sources reviewed; their absence here is not permission to obstruct visibility.
The research date shows when the sources were checked. It is not the date the law took effect, and it does not mean this page is monitored continuously. This research preview still awaits human editorial review; we do not claim attorney review.
