Kentucky window tint laws

Research checked October 14, 2026 (UTC)Research and review standards
The short answer

Kentucky’s windshield rule changed in 2024. Its side-window percentages also use a specific laboratory test basis, so a film label alone is not a complete compliance check.

Rules by window

Read the rule for each window, then check the vehicle type and exceptions in that row. VLT means visible light transmission: a lower percentage means less light passes through. Reflectance measures light reflected back from a surface; it is different from VLT.
WindowRequirement
WindshieldTransparent strip outside the AS-1 forward-view area, or windshield material producing at least 70% transmission with the safety glass and neither red nor yellow.
Front sideFilm must transmit at least 35% when tested on 1/8-inch clear glass.
Rear sideFilm: at least 18% under the specified test; 8% for a qualifying multipurpose passenger vehicle.
Rear windowSame film thresholds as rear sides; nontransparent rear treatment requires mirrors on both sides.

Reflection, labels and tolerance

Front film: maximum 25% reflection; rear film: maximum 35%, measured as the statute specifies. A compliance label with product and business details belongs inside the left door jamb. The statutory ±3% measurement tolerance should not become a darker installation target.

Medical exemptions

No medical-waiver process appears in the retrieved current section. Do not assume a physician’s note authorizes darker tint.

Other materials

Perforated rear-window products have separate transmission and reflectance tests. Factory glazing compliant with federal standards is treated separately.

Before you rely on this guide

This is general information, not legal advice, a vehicle inspection, or permission to install a particular film. Exceptions and enforcement procedures can depend on your circumstances.

  • The film-on-clear-glass test and finished-windshield test are different; confirm the proposed product and vehicle with a qualified installer.
