Montana window tint laws

The short answer

Montana uses a 24% front-side minimum and a 14% ordinary rear-glass minimum. Certain multipurpose vehicles, vans, and buses have a different rear-glass rule.

Rules by window

Read the rule for each window, then check the vehicle type and exceptions in that row. VLT means visible light transmission: a lower percentage means less light passes through. Reflectance measures light reflected back from a surface; it is different from VLT.
WindowRequirement
WindshieldBelow the AS-1 line, sunscreening material must be clear and transparent. Red, yellow, or amber material above that line is prohibited.
Front sideAt least 24% transmission; no more than 35% reflectance.
Rear sideOrdinarily at least 14% transmission and no more than 35% reflectance. The rear-window provision excepts multipurpose vehicles, vans, and buses.
Rear windowOrdinarily at least 14% transmission and no more than 35% reflectance, with the same class exception.

Check the class and the existing tint

Montana defines a multipurpose vehicle as carrying no more than 10 passengers and built on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road use. The rule expressly covers tinted windows with added sunscreening material. Manufacturer-tinted multipurpose vehicles and certain special-use vehicles have additional exceptions.

Medical waivers are issued, not assumed

The highway patrol or a local law-enforcement agency may grant a waiver for safety, security, or medical reasons. Medical support requires an affidavit from a licensed physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse. Section 61-9-405 refers to a currently valid waiver certificate affixed to the vehicle.

  • The statutory vehicle definition controls; the rear-glass exception should not be assigned automatically to every vehicle marketed as an SUV.
