Alberta's official tint guidance says tinting material cannot be attached to the windshield or the windows to the driver's left and right without an approved exemption. A lighter film is not automatically acceptable merely because it transmits a high percentage of light.
This guide covers ordinary passenger cars used on highways. It does not assess off-highway vehicles, specialized vehicle classes, or an individual's exemption eligibility.
Windshield and front side windows
Vehicle Equipment Regulation section 70(1) restricts installing, replacing or covering glazing with transparent, translucent or opaque material on the windshield and side windows beside or forward of the driver. It states no general top-of-windshield tint-strip exception. Section 72(3) requires highway-operated vehicles' glazing to comply with sections 70 and 71.
Original glazing and added film should be distinguished. Section 70(5) permits replacement of manufacturer-installed glazing with the same type; section 71 separately requires suitable, standards-compliant glazing. Those provisions do not establish a general permission to apply front-window film to factory glass.
Rear glazing and mirrors
Section 70(2) conditions added material on the rear window on having compliant exterior mirrors on both sides. Section 74(2) requires these mirrors to provide a clear view behind and along both sides when the interior view is obstructed or interfered with. Sections 70(3)–(4) restrict material that reflects approaching headlights or sunlight into another driver's eyes.
Grande Prairie Enforcement Services' April 10, 2026 guidance describes tint on rear side windows and the rear window as allowed with left and right side mirrors. This guide does not turn that summary into an unrestricted-darkness or inspection-pass guarantee.
Medical requests need an actual permit
Alberta publishes a window tint exemption application process. A supporting physician's letter is part of an application, not the exemption itself. Approved applicants receive a permit with requirements they must follow. Do not assume the process authorizes a windshield treatment or that another jurisdiction's approval is sufficient.
What to check
- Confirm which panes have added film and which contain manufactured-in tint.
- Do not treat an AS marking or a film's sales description as front-film permission.
- Check both exterior mirrors and their view before treating the back glass.
- Ask Alberta Vehicle Standards about the specific proposed installation if its material or classification is unclear.
No numerical aftermarket front-window allowance, measurement tolerance, visitor exemption or individual compliance result is supplied here.
