Before you tint your car: a simple installation checklist

You do not need to measure your glass or choose a product before asking a tint shop for a price. Start with your car's year, make and model, and say which windows you want done.

Use this checklist to make the final choice before work begins. Leave anything you do not know blank and ask the installer to help.

You can print this page using your browser.

  1. Explain what you want to improve

Tell the shop whether the main problem is heat, glare, appearance, daytime privacy or an existing tint issue. Mention frequent night driving or any difficulty seeing through the current windows.

Those details are more useful than choosing a dark shade first and hoping it solves every problem. A film's light transmission and heat-control figures describe different things.

Your notes: Main goal: ____. Driving or visibility concerns: ____.

  2. Get a price and identify the windows

Ask what the quoted package includes. Does “full car” include the windshield, a top strip, the sunroof or only side and rear windows? Ask rather than assume.

Mention old film if you know it is present. The shop may need to inspect it before confirming removal costs. You can compare initial prices before selecting the exact product.

Your notes: Vehicle: ____. Windows wanted: ____. Old film, if known: ____.

  3. Check the rules for those windows

Use the state directory to find the relevant guide and official sources. Ask the installer how the options fit the vehicle, window position and applicable requirements.

Check more than a shade name. Windshield placement, reflectivity, vehicle class, labels and exemptions can matter. A rule for rear windows should not be copied onto the front doors.

If you rely on an exemption, confirm its official process before treating it as permission. Use the medical-resource directory for the appropriate starting links.

Your notes: State and intended use: ____. Question to resolve: ____.

  4. Choose the film at the shop

Ask to see the available options and their installed prices. Before agreeing, record the exact product line and the selected option for each window.

If you compare VLT, ask what the figure measures. VLT means the visible light that passes through. A product table can include test glass, so its number is not automatically a film-only calculator input. A 3M technical sheet provides an example of different reference-glass tables.

Your notes: Chosen film and windows: ____. Expected finished result: ____.

  5. Check existing glass features

Discuss rear defroster lines, antennas, sensors, old damage and any brake light behind the glass. Ask how those features will be protected and assessed during the work.

The federal lighting standard separately addresses required lamp performance and obstructions. A tint percentage does not prove that a brake light remains compliant. Ask the installer how the actual light and window will meet the applicable requirements.

That does not supply a universal cutout size for your installation. Do not treat this as permission to cover required lights.

Source checked : Federal lighting standard. General information, not an installation approval.

Your notes: Features or existing damage: ____. Any extra work needing approval: ____.

  6. Confirm the total before installation

Record the complete price, including agreed removal and other charges. Ask when additional work would need your approval. Keep the quote with the final invoice.

  7. Keep the paperwork and care instructions

Ask for the receipt, applicable warranty and any legally required label or certificate. When measurements are taken, keep the window-by-window results. A calculated estimate should not be described as an inspection result.

Get the care instructions for the actual product, including when to operate the windows and how to clean them. Ask whom to contact if you notice lifting, haze or another concern. Follow the product's instructions rather than a universal waiting time from social media.

Your notes: Ready-to-use time: ____. Care instructions: ____. Contact for questions: ____.

Print this page and bring it to your appointment. It is a conversation guide, not a tint certificate or approval of your car.

A simple first message

Select and copy this text, replacing the brackets with your details:

Hi, could I get a tint price for my [year, make and model]? I would like [windows] tinted. There may be old film on [windows]. What options and appointments do you have?

Optional follow-up after choosing a film

If you want more detail, you can use this request. It is not needed for your first quote or appointment:

Could you please confirm the film brand and exact product line, the windows included, the selected film percentage for each window, whether removal is included, the warranty details, and the total price including any fees? I’d also like to understand the expected finished-window reading and the aftercare instructions for this product.

Common questions

Do I need a tint meter before getting a quote?

No. Give the shop the vehicle details and windows you want tinted. Measurements can be discussed when needed for choosing the product or checking the finished installation.

Should all the windows use the same film?

Not necessarily. Existing glass, legal requirements and your visibility needs can differ by window. Agree on each position before the work starts.

What paperwork should I keep?

Keep the invoice, exact product information, applicable warranty, care instructions and any required certificate or label information. Keep actual measurements when they are taken.
