Alaska's standard aftermarket-tint limits are 70% on the front doors and 40% on the rear glass. Manufacturer-identified multipurpose vehicles have a separate federal-standard provision.

Vehicle classification matters
13 AAC 04.223(b)(4) separately addresses for-hire limousines and passenger buses, motor homes, and vehicles identified by their manufacturer as multipurpose. Their tint must comply with the referenced federal glazing standard; this is not a blanket permission to darken every window.
Appearance and measurement
Mirrored tint is prohibited. Permitted colors are green, gray, bronze, neutral smoke, or sun-reflective auto film, subject to that prohibition. The rule provides a 3-percentage-point manufacturing variance for meter measurements; use the stated limits when selecting film.
Medical and older-window exceptions
Darker tint requires an Alaska-licensed physician's annual certification of medical need for a driver or frequent passenger, carried in the vehicle. A rear-window exception requires proof of installation before July 1, 1994, plus both outside mirrors.
Before you rely on this guide
This is general information, not legal advice, a vehicle inspection, or permission to install a particular film. Exceptions and enforcement procedures can depend on your circumstances.
- The federal-standard provision does not mean every SUV can have dark tint on every window. Confirm the vehicle classification and which windows the provision covers before installation.
