Alabama window tint laws

The short answer

Alabama distinguishes passenger cars from manufacturer-classified multipurpose and recreational vehicles. Check the vehicle classification before choosing darker film for the rear.

Rules by window

Read the rule for each window, then check the vehicle type and exceptions in that row. VLT means visible light transmission: a lower percentage means less light passes through. Reflectance measures light reflected back from a surface; it is different from VLT.
WindowRequirement
WindshieldTransparent material is allowed only on the uppermost six inches under the ordinary rule; red and amber are excluded from this exception.
Front sideAt least 32% light transmission.
Rear sidePassenger cars and station wagons: at least 32%. Qualifying multipurpose and recreational vehicles may use darker rear tint within the federal/manufacturer allowance.
Rear windowPassenger cars and station wagons: at least 32%. The qualifying rear-window exception requires exterior mirrors on both sides.

Reflection, approved materials and labels

Ordinary side and rear tint must not exceed 20% light reflectance. Manufacturers must obtain approval and registration for their tint materials and compliance labels. The vehicle must display a compliance label visible from outside; ALEA says a tint dealer must affix it.

Medical exemptions

Apply to ALEA with a written statement from an Alabama-licensed physician. The exemption may cover a vehicle the applicant owns or regularly rides in and may carry conditions. For light-sensitive porphyria, the approved exemption covers the windshield and window areas prescribed by the physician. ALEA issues a uniquely numbered windshield decal and may charge a reasonable fee.

Other statutory exceptions

Section 32-5C-3 separately addresses factory or federally permitted glazing and vehicles not registered in Alabama. Section 32-5C-2 also exempts personal-use vehicles belonging to and occupied by an active or retired state, local or federal law-enforcement officer, with law-enforcement identification carried while driving.

Before installation

Have the installer measure the existing glass and the finished window. A film’s advertised VLT does not establish transmission through both layers. Manufacturer classification controls the multipurpose/recreational rear-window allowance described by ALEA.
